The Russian Geographical Society, of which Vladimir Putin is Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and which traditionally participates in a large number of projects for rare species conservation, is the founder of the Centre of Amur Tiger Fund.

A special fund for Amur tiger conservation was formed in Russia at the initiative of Russian President Vladimir Putin, informed ITAR-TASS on Monday, July 29, with reference to the Russian presidential press service.

The Fund reportedly will be financed from non-budgetary resources. Presidential Control Directorate Head Konstantin Chuichenko is appointed Head of the Supervisory Council of the Fund.

“The Fund has been established as an autonomous non-profit organization Centre of Amur Tiger, the Russian Geographical Society is its founder, of which Vladimir Putin is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and which traditionally participates in a large number of projects for rare species conservation”, the Kremlin press service reported.
“The organization will be funded from non-budgetary resources, particularly from grants of the Russian Geographical Society,” the Kremlin pledged.

The Fund will help conserve and increase the population of Amur tigers. “The experience of similar funds showed that this type of activity allows solving the problem of preserving rare species of animals efficiently,” the Kremlin believes.
As an example the Kremlin cited the experience of the Eurasian Centre on Study, Conservation and Restoration of Leopard Population, which is supervised by Head of the Russian Presidential Administration Sergei Ivanov. Thanks to the efforts of this organization the population of Amur leopards has grown by nearly 1.5 times for the last few years.

“The Centre of Amur Tiger Fund was formed to fulfill the commitments, which Russia assumed during the International Tiger Summit in 2010 hosted by Russia,” the Russian presidential press service reported.

As many as 13 tiger range countries set the goal to double the number of tigers in the wild within 12 next years. The law introducing a tougher responsibility for killing and trading of rare animals that Russian President signed recently is aimed to resolve this task.

  1. I’m really happy to hear that Vladimir Putin offered his contribution to protect and save the Amur Tigers. This animals are amazing and need a particular protection before it’s too late. I appreciate the fact that a strong personality like Putin takes care on this project.
