Canine distemper epidemic in southern Primorye

2.02.2004

On February 02, 2004 the local mass media disseminated information received from Vladivostok veterinary clinics. According to the vets’ report, all dogs irrespective of age and strain are susceptible to this epidemic. Infected animals die within a week. Unfortunately, specialists cannot rescue any infected dog. As vets explained, the virus that causes this fatal illness has mutated over the past years. Similar infective episodes have been noticed mainly in the off-season. This winter, the virus has already killed many dogs in southern Primorye. Ecologists are concerned about wild animals, especially Amur leopards and tigers, which sometimes prey on dogs, and therefore, can be exposed to the virus, which can be fatal to both species.
