More than 9,000 rubles ($310) were collected during Tiger Day festivities in Vladivostok and Luchegorsk.
For already two years Phoenix has been collecting donations for the most urgent environmental needs in the framework of “HELP!” charity campaign. In September 2010, Phoenix took a decision to help Federal state institution “Inspection Tiger” raise funds to built a specialized rehabilitation centre for rare species of animals. We appealed to Tiger Day participants, and here is the result! The amount is not large, but it is just a first “brick” into a big project.
Let us remind you that the necessity of building a proper rehab centre appeared a long time ago. Each winter tiger cubs lose their mothers due to hunger, poaching and illnesses, and become totally hopeless in severe climatic conditions. Lucky they are if they get care and treatment in time. Unfortunately, having recovered, most of them go directly to zoos, as so far there are no good conditions for their re-integration into natural habitat.
In mid-November 2010, works on the creation of the first high-level rehabilitation centre in Russia for wild animals, including tigers, will start. Presently, Inspection Tiger, the mission of which is conservation of the Amur tiger population, possesses only a centre for temporary keeping. It is nothing more than a simple garage on the farm of an Inspection Tiger specialist. There tiger cubs get first medical aid and are fed to regain health. Some of them are transported to “Utyos” centre by Khabarovsk City or to Gaivoron centre of the Far Eastern branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (close to Spassk-Dalny town). However, these facilities are not adequate either. Moreover, long road may have a negative impact of animals’ state.
