Since 2006, the Phoenix Fund in cooperation with the Amur Branch of WWF-Russia, WCS-Russia, Union of Ecological Press-Clubs of the Russian Far East and Primorsky Department of Federal Nature Use Service, with generous support from foreign partners and other sponsors has been honoring journalists who possess the courage to make nature conservation issues public and who devoted much of their professional lives to trumpeting the environmental threats. Every year the jury reviews TV features and articles on the following categories: “Amur Tiger Home”, “Korean Pine Is a Tree of Life”, “Green Belt of the Amur River”, “Hunting Leases Keep Ward on Nature”, “Protected Areas” and “Environment and Energy Industry”.
The jury is guided by the following selection criteria: topicality, originality, novelty, importance of the information for the public, author’s attitude towards the topic, educational and social values of the material, etc.
Thanks to support from the Rufford Maurice Laing Foundation, David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation, Pacific Environment and others a special award a cut-glass ginseng, was produced and memorable prizes were purchased for winners.
From 2006 to 2012 as many as 374 journalists participated in the Awards competitions and submitted over 1,260 newspaper articles, TV features and broadcastings, videos and programmes. And 150 journalists have already attended a specially tailored workshop for newsmen which is considered the best prize for the contestants.
