Olginsky District Court passed a sentence upon a local for violating Article 258.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (illegal taking of especially valuable wild animals) and Article 222 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (illegal purchasing and storage of rifled firearms).

As it was determined in a court session, on January 27, 2018, the criminal defendant intentionally fired at least two shots at an Amur tiger. As a result, the rare animal got two gunshot wounds (one in the head and another one in right hind limb).

However, the defendant failed to complete his malicious intent because the tiger managed to disappear in the forest. On the following day, the man continued to track down the injured animal. When spotting the tiger, the poacher fired at the animal again.

The Court found the defendant guilty in mentioned above illegal actions aimed at taking the especially valuable wild animal listed in Red Book of the Russian Federation, hunting of which is completely prohibited, and in firearm trafficking. The criminal was sentenced to two years in probation. Moreover, the Court sentenced the poacher to pay a fine of 2.2 million roubles as compensation of ecological damage (for provisional measures a seizure order was issued).

It is worth mentioning that after the second attempt to kill the tiger, the poacher was attacked by the injured animal. At that moment, his fellow man fearing for the life of his friend fired two shots at the tiger for an innocent reason, forced by an extreme necessity (therefore he was not brought to criminal liability).
